These cells must complete at least two jobs. First, they need to survive and proliferate to be able to produce adequate cells ahead of the differentiation program starts. Second, they have to keep the differentiation program under control before the arrival of the MF. In the developing eye disk, retinal progenitor cells reside anterior to the MF, where in fact the means of retinal differentiation begins.

However, it's remained an open question whether Tsh and Hth also increase cell growth and survival of these progenitor cells and, whenever they do, what target genes and pathways these two transcription factors control to mediate these functions.
